They are sexy, loud, raucous, bawdy, rude, daring, graceful, beautiful, hilarious, often at the same time. And audience participation–dancing, singing, partying, making out–is both encouraged and expected. A quick look at the upcoming schedule will give you a good feel if the House of Yes style of entertainment is right for you. This is the third incarnation of the House of Yes—the first one was in a Bed-Stuy basement and was mostly a spot for wild underground parties.

The dress code matches the club’s uniqueness

That includes Cecconi’s — a modern Italian restaurant serving pastas, pizza, and seafood — and Little Ned, a Prohibition-era cocktail bar with small plates and views of the Empire State Building. As a rank-and-file hard-liner, Mr. Johnson had largely opposed efforts to fund Kyiv’s war effort. And early in his speakership, he declared he would never allow the matter to come to a vote until his party’s border demands were met. House of Yes was created in 2007 by Kae Burke and Anya Sapozhnikova, two best friends who just wanted to make art and have a good time. With lots of help and lots of love, the original idea of House of Yes have transformed into a reality beyond what anyone ever imagined. Your entry into our home is a promise to respect and protect it.

To accompany this bold affirmation are several geometric designs, as well as an eyelid covering the entryway and luscious lips adorning its surfaces.

Capturing the Ephemeral and Enduring Spaces That Make Brooklyn Weird

The Library transitions from a leisurely area by day to a nighttime lounge with an elegant bar and fireplace. Most of our Friday and Saturday parties are themed, and we do encourage our guests to dress in creative outfits and costumes. Do your best to match the theme of the night, but anything that displays effort will do. Despite the fierce competition in New York’s nightlife industry, House of Yes will remain a leading club where queer people can feel safe, express themselves, and enjoy an unparalleled clubbing experience.

But don’t wait, don’t procrastinate, don’t be late. We depend on ad revenue to craft and curate stories about the world’s hidden wonders. Consider supporting our work by becoming a member for as little as $5 a month.

Spending a night out at House of Yes in Bushwick is like entering a whole new world full of room for sexual freedom. The transformative themed sets feel like an adult playground. The most likely wildest club in New York City opened its doors in 2015. From day one House of Yes (HOY) is a great mix of nightclub and circus with both electronic music and live entertainment. Get ready for an impressive setting with high ceilings, huge screens showing video entertainment, a backyard and probably the best bathrooms you’ll ever experience. The Ned, which originated in London’s former Midland Bank headquarters, gets its name from the building’s 1920s-era designer Sir Edwin ‘Ned’ Lutyens.

When a massive fire demolished that space in the mid-2000s, Anya and Kae decided to create a highly professional aerialist training facility and performance venue in the heart of East Williamsburg. In 2013 the lost the lease on the second space, and began a search for an even grander location. After six months of searching, they signed a lease on their current location in Bushwick and they officially opened on New Years 2016.

In 2019, House of Yes joined forces with Edition Hotel and Studio 54’s Ian Schrager to produce an immersive show, The Devouring. While it is difficult to summarize the theatrical performance using one adjective, ‘superlative’ comes to mind. New York is the city of all possibilities – and it seems like House of Yes received this memo.

Members across New York, London, and Doha can access all of Ned’s Clubs globally until the end of 2025. The Ned’s interior spaces will sport their own names, like the Drawing Room and Conservatory. Rooms across the 10th floor pay tribute to former U.S. presidents. The Dining Room, filled with stained-glass fixtures, handsome wooden accents, and “sun-drenched dining settings,” is meant to evoke the Kennedy years.

House of Yes was created in 2007 by Kae Burke and Anya Sapozhnikova, two of the producers behind Lady Circus. Earth Love Fest 2024, the house dance party, block party, and eco-festival at House of Yes in Bushwick, Brooklyn; is Sunday, April 21, 2024, from 12noon – 7pm. Many of the House of Yes denizens also make up the loose conglomeration of female acrobats Lady Circus, performing at underground parties and cabarets across the country. The Lady Circus performers were even featured as a costume-design challenge on Project Runway in 2011.

On other days of the week, wear whatever makes you feel fun, fresh, funky and fabulous. We put a lot of love into our parties, and the energy of the night is incredible when everyone is committed to participating and getting creative with us. But House of Yes had to change its location a year after, when a fire almost destroyed the building. Less than two months later, House of Yes relocated to a former ice-house in East Williamsburg. But it wasn’t until 2015 that the New York club opened its doors on the current site.

Open Water aluminum canned water is available for purchase at the club, instead of plastic bottles, or you can feel free to use our water refill station in the front room. We have recycling bins located throughout the venue, including recycling containers for cigarettes in the courtyard. By merging the aerial performances, jaw-dropping dances and top-notch theatricals, the show showcases an eye-opening theme – the marriage between heaven and hell. As diversified as the rainbow clientele it draws, this New York club is never a low-key scene. From cage dancers to Tarot readers, House of Yes showcases a sheer craziness that makes it one of the most lusted-after clubbing destinations in New York. In 2007, Kae Burke and Anya Sapozhnikova started House of Yes with the mission to embrace artistic expression while organizing remarkable parties.

If you prefer a private restroom, please find single-occupancy restrooms located at the far right corner of the main theater room. We love the planet and continually look for ways to reduce plastic waste in our club. Given the risque nature of the club’s parties and ideologies, safety and comfort restrictions were a must. When it comes to intimacy and inside the club’s walls, House of Yes is very strict about its consent rules.

With its jaw-dropping selection of aerial shows, burlesque performances and anything circus-related, the sprawling nightclub shows that the roaring 80s’ era is still very much alive. “We’re not just providing physical spaces but an environment that reimagines networking, entertainment, dining and events in an iconic building and location that only D.C. Could offer,” says group managing director Gareth Banner, in a statement. The different presale ticket tiers (or sometimes called “releases’) simply indicate when you’ve purchased the ticket. Ticket prices increase as you get closer to the event date – corresponding to an increased ticket tier. All ticket tiers grant the same level access to the party.

House of Yes is an aerial circus burlesque dance club in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Choosing the perfect costume that suits the party theme can be tricky, urging Burke and Sapozhnikova to create mood boards for every themed event. Every June, the nightclub becomes a pro at hosting Pride-related events.

Is TBD, and the fee to join is being finalized soon. Applications go live in May, but there’s a inquiry page here. The Ned comes from Soho House founder Nick Jones and billionaire investor Ron Burkle, whose public company Soho House & Co Inc. oversees both global brands.

The space includes a private members’ club, Ned’s Club, and a private events floor, alongside 10 restaurants and 250 bedrooms. There's a legitimate, raised, professional-seeming stage now, and the 30-feet-high ceiling over the audience ensures the signature aerialists have plenty of room to swing and soar. As you would expect, the bathroom is fun, decor-wise, and there are serendipitous design discoveries throughout. A long bar, a back bar, and large dance/spectating floor (they break out the folding chairs) complete the picture… except for the tiny, terrific Queen of Falafel shop that's part of the new complex. I've had just about everything here–the Falafel and Shakshuka (poached eggs in harissa-tomato sauce) Sandwiches; the Hummus and Labne Cheese plates–and it's all top-tier stuff. All entrances and spaces within the venue are single-level and accessible to folks in wheelchairs.

If you need to go out and dance on the Lower East Side, Home Sweet Home is, at this point, a classic option. If you have ever been to Pianos to see a band in the back room, you probably didn't expect that it's the kind of place that would turn out some damn good bar food.

They continue to put on high-energy, high-caliber, innovative circus and cabaret performances. They make all their costumes in the Make Fun Labs, build their own sets, and collaborate with Brooklyn bands for live musical accompaniment. Performances showcase aerialists, trapezists, fire-dancers, contortionists, burlesque acts, singers, musicians, and more. House of Yes is also a great after-hours party spot, with DJs spinning far into the wee hours most weekend nights.

Maybe this is part of the reason why House of Yes features an atrium, a six-armed statue overlooking the toilets and a steel-like cage above the main bar. Twirling circus performers and pseudo-drag queens ranked House of Yes as the best thing to do in Brooklyn. From its exciting activities to its awe-inspiring interiors, House of Yes is sure to tantalize your senses and deliver an unforgettable experience.

Honor the humans who work to make this all possible. Show kindness, love and composure to your fellow guests, staff and the creators and they will do so in return. The club was built by a Brooklyn circus collective. However, our local Bushwick neighborhood is full of awesome options for dinner before you dance. All of our bathrooms are gender neutral / gender-inclusive. We welcome you to use whichever restroom best suits your gender identity or expression.

Baby’s is one of our favorite bars in Williamsburg. It’s a great option if you’re looking for live music, light snacks, or a bottomless brunch. There is always a great party at House of Yes and they keep redefining their parties with new themes, new decorations, and shows. The entry line often runs around the block, so make sure to get your tickets online before heading there. You will also be able to skip the lines in case you already purchased a ticket.

Ceramic floor tile patterns also offers wide versatility in how your floor is installed, — creative choices not possible with other flooring materials. The tile design embodies a modern interpretation of a botanical print, with the shape mirroring the simple outline of a leaf. The use of blue creates an elegant contrast with the natural tones, whilst the black connects and grounds the tile floor design to the indoor-outdoor space. The compact, gray square tiles used in this bathroom sit beautifully on the floor and wall, creating a spa-like design where natural textures and colors work together harmoniously.

Subway (Brick)

When choosing tiles for your living room flooring ideas, opt for tiles colored with natural pigments – such as these from Bert & May – as they will bring a sense of warmth and depth to the scheme. They will also provide a neutral backdrop that will suit a wide variety of interior styles. ‘In this bathroom, we wanted to use a contrast-colored grout as part of the design scheme.

Add Definition

The brick joint pattern looks — and is — very simple, but don’t let that fool you when it’s time to lay your tiles. A 25% offset between each motif may make the pattern much more complicated to lay than you’d think. A large square, a rectangular tile, and a small square combine to create an upside-down repeated L shape in the block tile pattern.

Pretty It Up with Pattern

More affordable than marble or granite, it is often made with fragments of glass, marble, metal or quartz, and comes in an unlimited range of colors. If your kitchen styling ideas are stuck in neutral territory, one of the best ways to create instant wow factor is with a striking backsplash. The palatial Versailles pattern contains the same number and types of tiles as the standard version, but it has a slightly different layout. Considering its name, the kaleidoscope pattern is actually much simpler than you’d expect. Four different tiles — and only six tiles total — make up a straightforward motif.

Add a tiled kitchen countertop

design tiles design

Choose a colored tile and play around with grout colors too, while you could enhance the area furthermore by lining it with another bolder color. Gray is (still) everyone's favorite color these days; we have gray bedrooms, gray living rooms, and, yes, many of us have gray bathrooms too. To counteract the potential for a cold-looking room, combine grey tiles with a warm oat or rusty shade, and be a little bolder with how you lay your tiles.

When tiling a kitchen or conservatory, that leads out onto your patio ideas or to an outdoor kitchen, opt for a tile that creates a seamless flow between outside and in. A stone or porcelain tile with a high anti-slip rating can be paired with a level threshold and applied both outside and indoors. This creates the illusion, that when the doors are open, the space is one. This would be the perfect finishing touch to create a seamless flow between a kitchen and outdoor dining area – particularly useful if you are looking for space-boosting tiny kitchens. Subway tiles are a truly timeless choice of wall tiles – especially bathroom wall tile ideas.

Her new TileBar collection, Art Gallery, features mural-like, oversized tiles embellished with precious materials, including real gold and silver. Elegant and refined, a herringbone pattern is an excellent tile choice for a “barely there” but still statement-making space. This look keeps the eye looking up while still connecting it to the space. If you don’t want to deal with the fuss (or the math!) of laying individual tiles in an intricate pattern, look for pre-patterned sheets of tiles.

Tile ideas – 14 statement designs for every room in the home

Sizes like 16” x 16”, 12” x 24” and even 24” x 48” are becoming more prevalent. Large-format tiles have fewer grout lines to clean and help a room look bigger, more open and less busy. Tile thickness is moving in the opposite direction as consumers are leaning towards thinner options.

Contrast plain walls with patterned flooring

It's not always easy to find original reclaimed tiles that will fill an entire space though, so instead look for contemporary designs with purposefully crackle-glazed surfaces and chipped edges. The beauty of these tiles is that they can look wonderful without the need for adding color – but choosing a stand-out tile shape and accent color is a great way to create impact. The beauty of terracotta is that it will gain a patina over time, so the longer you have it, the more characterful it will look. Whether you're looking to stick to kitchen tile trends or achieve a more timeless look, terracotta fits the bill.

The traditional advice is to use large format tiles with minimal grouting to create the illusion of space. Indeed, they can even be designed to have a 'tumbled' edge to make them appear aged which is perfect for a country kitchen. Eye-catching tile shapes can create a wonderful feature within a modern kitchen – triangles and hexagons are big tile trends for this year, while scallop-shaped tiles have endured for decades.

This is a pattern that involves laying tiles at a 45-degree angle to create a zigzag pattern. This involves interlocking rectangular tiles to create a woven or basket-like effect. It's a classic pattern that adds a touch of elegance and sophistication to any space. Large format tile designs are easy to install, convenient to maintain and elevate beauty, especially in compact spaces like bathrooms.

In case of any spills, immediately clean and remove the stains with soap and water. Tile designs made with glossy surfaces are easy to clean with a wet cloth or a sponge and soap water. Porcelain tiles are a new and better variety of ceramic tiles used for kitchen, bathroom and living spaces. These tiles are highly resistant to water, highly durable, stain and frost/fire with minimal maintenance. Flooring tile textures are matt, glossy, high-gloss, rustic and anti-skid.

Our selection of Zellige tiles, handmade in Morocco, has grown over the last year to include more shapes, sizes and colors. Each of these tiles is handcrafted, giving it unique variations in color and shape. BANGOR, Maine (CBS/AP) -- Stephen and Tabitha King are ready for the next chapter for their Victorian mansion that stands behind a wrought iron gate festooned with winged creatures and spiderwebs.

Over the course of two years, Steel designed and built 350 feet of fencing and two large gates, including the double gate at the front of the property. He let his imagination run wild with the design of the front gate, and utilized some of the unique skills his teacher, Hurwitz, had taught him, like hot-carving creature heads. Fans of the writer make pilgrimages to the residence to take photos by the creepy gate out front, where wrought-iron spiders, winged creatures, and reptiles guard the entrance. While people would regularly stop and watch them work during the creation of the fence and gates, Steel didn’t realize what a draw it would become until years later. A 10-minute drive east of Bangor is the cemetery that appeared in the film version of Pet Sematary (in the scene King cameos in, no less). Steel said he had no idea at the time that the Tabitha he spoke to on the phone was one of the famous Kings.

The furniture is a mix of antique and vintage pieces that add to the overall creepy atmosphere of the house. King’s family moved frequently during his childhood, living in several different states before finally settling back in Maine when King was eleven years old. The move had a profound impact on the young writer, who found solace in reading and writing to cope with the upheaval. The King manor lies on roughly 2 acres of land and was built in an Italianate Villa style. The sleepy tree-lined streets that surround Stephen King’s house feature plenty of menacing shadows that will surely give you the shivers.

I don’t know if this has ever been proven true by King himself, but cool nonetheless. Even if one weren’t a King fan, Mount Hope Cemetery is definitely worth a visit. It’s one of the nation’s oldest garden cemeteries and is almost 200 years old. If you find yourself in Maine, Bangor is well worth the trip (even not as a King fan) and I’ve put together a self-guided Stephen King tour to Bangor. The van stops at the corner of Jackson and Union Streets which looks like many other intersections across the U.S.

In 2017, a little ahead of the new It movie, a red balloon appeared in one of the house’s windows. Stephen King’s former Bangor house has also become one of the most-photographed celebrity homes in the US. It’s not hard to miss the Victorian mansion, which was already on the property since it was built in 1858. The left side tower was believed to be added in 1895, and the large front porch in 1912.

But Stephen King still occasionally greets fans outside that home, said Stu Tinker, operator of SK Tours of Maine, which takes visitors to sites around Bangor that inspired the author. The house next door, which the Kings bought in 2004, would provide housing for up to five writers in residence at a time. The short story Trucks, which was the precursor for the movie Maximum Overdrive, is believed to be inspired by Dysart’s Restaurant & Truck Stop in Hermon, Maine. They take a classic truck stop and amp it up to the max, offering great food, a fun pub atmosphere, and gas pumps to fill up your car before you leave.

The iconic settings inside Stephen King’s house have captured the imagination of readers and moviegoers alike. From the Red Room that inspires “The Shining” to the wrought-iron gate from “Pet Sematary,” every detail feels like a part of Stephen King’s hauntingly beautiful world. Over the years, King’s writing rituals and creative process have been the subject of countless interviews and articles. His method of writing has inspired aspiring writers all over the world to follow in his footsteps and develop their own unique routines. While on the tour, Tinker was reading Night Shift and connecting the dots from short stories to novels for his eager guests. Many characters and their future stories were born in the shorts you find in this collection.

Karen Penner (portrayed by Debbie Gregory) is the aunt of one of Michelle's friends as well as one of Danny's girlfriends over the course of the show. She met Danny at Michelle's circus party in the season 3 episode "The Greatest Birthday on Earth", where he instantly fell for her, inviting her to stay for the party and also giving her a heart-shaped balloon. In "Lust in the Dust" Karen became Stephanie's dance teacher later in season three, and Danny started going out with her after the two kissed. They got along well until Danny found out she had trouble maintaining a clean apartment. He broke up with her because of that, but after talking it over with Jesse and Joey, he returned to her apartment to find that she had cleaned it (by shoving everything in the closet) and he apologized which led to them reconciling their relationship. They continued their relationship until sometime in either season 3 or early season 4.

When Becky and Danny get fired from Wake Up USA, they try to get their old jobs back but the station only wanted her back to co-host an all women's talk show. Jesse, Becky, and Pamela are all moving back to San Francisco, and he also bought back the Smash Club (which is now a laundromat) along with Joey.

He is known for having a healthy appetite, and often eats at the Tanners' when he visits. Jesse's obsession with his hair becomes a major trait throughout the series. In season seven's "The Perfect Couple," Vicky ends up getting her dream job of anchoring the network news in New York City, but a long-distance relationship does not work for either of them. Danny decides to break up with her, leading him to a mass feng shui habit in the next episode, "Is It True About Stephanie?," which his family acknowledges is his way of trying to cope with his breakup. The actor was found dead in an Orlando hotel room on Jan. 9, 2022, after doing a stand-up show outside of Jacksonville, Florida.

Not much is revealed about Nelson's background or family, aside from the fact that he is very rich, and often throws and attends big parties on yachts. Though in "Taking the Plunge," he mentions that his cousin, Regina – with whom he sets Joey up on a date – is visiting the United States from England. Toward the latter stages of his "relationship" with D.J., in "D.J.'s Choice," he gets into a "tug-of-war" with Viper to be D.J.'s boyfriend, to which she declines both boys. Nelson shows up to his and D.J.'s 20th High School Reunion in season two of Fuller House.

Jesse and Joey end up bidding for a new car that is identical in appearance, unknowingly competing with Danny, who purchases the car (and later named it "Walter") after he calls the car dealership that Jesse and Joey are at, and places a bid over the phone. Fernando Hernandez-Guerrero-Fernandez-Guerrero (portrayed by Juan Pablo Di Pace), is Kimmy Gibbler's race car driving ex-husband/fiancé. At the start of Fuller House, he and Kimmy are separated due to his unfaithfulness to her. Fernando begins to miss her and tries to win her back. 25 Modern Floor Tile Designs The Best Tile Patterns for Every Room

While the larger tiles make it slightly harder to distinguish the trellis pattern, they also make the design more suitable for larger floor spaces. The alternating vertical pattern alternates square and rectangular tiles in columns rather than rows. Again, remember to lay the rectangle tiles horizontally and offset the columns. Rather than having alternate rows of square and rectangular tiles, the alternating horizontal pattern alternates the squares and rectangles themselves within a single row.

The designer established two seating areas within the space, including a cozy gathering spot with chaise longues that flank the original carved marble fireplace. The room’s coffered ceilings were enhanced with a faux-wood decorative painting by Jhon Ardilla. “I really feel like the dining room is a forgotten room,” says the designer, who set out to prove how vital the space is to a home. The room is anchored by a Riva 1920 table made with the wood of a 50,000-year-old Kauri tree, which Levine surrounded with seating for 12. Another seating area with views of the garden was designed for more intimate dining, games, or meetings, and it’s illuminated by a Murano glass chandelier. At the far end of the room, Levine installed a lush purple sofa with cocktail tables, creating the perfect spot for drinks, dessert, or relaxing with a cup of coffee.

Choose terrazzo for on-trend kitchen tile ideas

Grilli and the team at Daltile remind homeowners that innovative technology is at the forefront of tile design. What does this mean when it comes to making a final decision on your tile design? In this bathroom, the metro tiles have been grouted with bright blue grout to give a burst of color to the otherwise neutral space. If opting for encaustic tiles, research how to clean encaustic tiles as it is slightly different from cleaning traditional porcelain tiles. Traditionally crafted from clay, cement is a popular alternative due to its affordability,  despite being slightly more porous.

Coastal-Inspired Patterns

Many manufacturers mount mosaic windmill patterns on strips or sheets for easier installation. Like the traditional herringbone pattern but instead of overlapping the rectangular tiles to create the L shape of the zigzag, this pattern adds a square tile where the rectangles would meet. Ceramic floor tile can help visually expand narrow rooms, elongate wide rooms, and even hide a room’s imperfections if you simply use the right installation pattern.

White Bathroom Tile Floors

In this Ohio farmhouse bathroom, rustic terra-cotta tiles in varying shades add timeworn charm. When you think of marble, chances are that you envision it in traditional white with subtle gray veining. That’s certainly a classic look for kitchens and bathrooms, but Grilli says you’ll also see more “statement stones” that feature stronger and more defined veins. Opt for cream or white tiles with a gloss finish to help reflect light back into the room. Laying patterns, such as herringbone, can also make a house look bigger as they draw the eye into the room and visually accentuate its length.

As an award-winning designer, product developer, and advocate for sustainability in design, Angela Harris finds inspiration in materials as well as a vivid imagination. Her Flatiron collection mimics the look of aged sheet metal with a shimmering patina—in durable, affordable porcelain. Handcrafted in Morocco from local clay, Zellige (pronounced zell-idge) brings depth and texture to space, reflecting different tones as the sun shifts throughout the day.

This has led to a passion for traditional interiors, particularly the country-look. Cozy up the space by dressing with living room rug ideas – such as this Berber design – and pairing them with warming metallics and leather furnishings for an inviting, rustic ambiance. While typically reserved for the more functional rooms of the home, tiles also have a place in living room ideas. 'If you want to use tiles outdoors, make sure you find out the slip-rating and ensure that they can withstand frost when you lay them in the great outdoors,' advices Hamish Smith of Ca' Pietra. Add rows of horizontal stacked rectangular to the vertical corridor pattern, and you have the stacked corridor pattern. Resembling traditional white picket fences, picket fence tile can be laid horizontally or vertically.

Maintenance Of Tile Designs

You can replicate this look in a multitude of shades to add a bit of cottage charm. We would be remiss not to share that intricate floor patterns can be created on a SINGLE tile. In this flooring example, the large-format square ceramic tiles are laid in a simple square grid but note how the tiles together create a larger pattern. This exquisite look is achievable through a manufacturing advancement that bakes the texture and tones of wood and parquet design into the ceramic tile. The pinwheel pattern is similar to the windmill pattern, except it uses both square and rectangular tiles to create the frame surrounding the central square tile. Because of this added complexity, the pinwheel pattern creates even greater visual interest.

By using a small penny mosaic tile there is more colored grout on show, and the impact is greater,' explains says Alex Keit, interior designer and decorator at Otta Design. Durable, easy to clean and virtually indestructible, porcelain comes in an endless range of colors, shapes and finishes – including lookalikes of other materials, including wood. Kitchen tile costs aside, the best choice for most kitchen tile ideas is porcelain, for the balance of practicality and designs available. Tile countertop ideas have witnessed a resurgence in recent years as homeowners seek to experiment with different surface textures in their home.

The alternating patterns introduce an intriguing element, while the darker tones add depth. Chevron, characterized by its inverted V shape, seamlessly creates a zig-zag pattern, making it a favored choice for backsplashes. The vibrant hues and intricate patterns of Moroccan tiles enhance the appeal of any kitchen backsplash, infusing it with a distinctive blend of geometric motifs and rich colors.

“Our whole goal with this space was basically to turn the lights on in the room, bring in the garden that’s outside, and kind of have an experience of a breath of fresh air,” Brosio says. A brick-walled patio became a party-ready outdoor kitchen and dining area thanks to Douglas R. Santicola of Outdoor Elegance. Santicola and Monique Wood installed Caesarstone countertops fabricated by Carlito’s Way Stone to create a functional space for outdoor entertaining. Now that we’ve understood when you’ll need to create and use styles, it’s the right time to take a closer look at exactly how you should use them. Style tiles are a great tool for early design exploration because they let you try out different colors, typography, and visual elements without committing to a full design. Your color palette is one of the most essential elements in your style tile.

Because of gauged porcelain tile’s sheer size, you can barely notice its grout lines. A straight grid using rectangles creates a modern, minimalist surface that works equally as well in large-format ceramic tile as it does in mosaics. Scalloped bathroom tiles are also having a bit of a moment, especially in shower enclosures or used in a half and half look. Plus herringbone designs are everywhere but have longevity too so a great option if you are after an alternative to metro tiles.

Subsequently, think about the beauty of the tile designs and how you want them to add utility and style to your rooms. Depending on your home's layout and available space, decide on a binding theme for the spaces. For example, you may want to separate the dry and wet areas of the kitchen or bathroom and accordingly, you may end up choosing tile design quality, size, colours and patterns. Herringbone is a pattern that involves laying tiles at a 45-degree angle to create a zigzag pattern.

Her best friends, Teddy and Denise, appear frequently in later seasons. Her best friends in school are Gia Mahan and Mickey, whom she meets in season seven (the former is the only one who appears through to season eight). In her early years, she is very sentimental about Mr. Bear, a stuffed animal that her mother gave to her after Michelle was born (this was the focal point of the season two episode "Goodbye Mr. Bear"). She and Jesse are the most abrasive when it comes to how they feel about Kimmy Gibbler. Jesse moves into the house with virtually no experience in taking care of young children or babies, but learns the ropes along the way.

They want her to host an all-women's talk show called The Gab. She, Jesse and Pamela move back to San Francisco. The Gab is a hit but turns back into Wake Up San Francisco. When the show starts back up Danny refuses to audition to be her co-host, which results in her being stuck with a Neanderthal co-host, but not long after he is able to get his old job back. Matt eventually starts dating Gia much to DJ's annoyance.

Danny Tanner

Conversely, Stephanie was also a positive influence on Gia. During an unknown time when her parents had been through a divorce, Gia is shown as a cigarette-smoking, rebellious teen with horrible grades. She is two years older than Stephanie, as she was held back in school. Viewers learn (as of "Making Out is Hard to Do") that because of Stephanie, Gia has stopped smoking, became more respectful, improved her grades, and lost her inclination to play pranks on other people. Gia becomes the target of put downs at the hands of Michelle in much the same way as Kimmy is targeted by Stephanie. Over time, Michelle becomes quite creative with her insults.

In season five, Steve, Jimmy, and Fernando all go in together to buy a local sandwich shop when the owner, Uncle Monty, retires. And they get married in the series finale, along with Stephanie and Jimmy, and Kimmy and Fernando, in a triple wedding. In "A Very Tanner Christmas," Steve receives an acceptance letter to Daytona Beach University in Florida, which causes he and D.J. To briefly break up due to D.J.'s concern that she would miss him.

A blind date for prom and ends up surprising her with her ex-boyfriend Steve instead. 'A House Made of Splinters' Review: Sundance Doc on Ukrainian Children

Typical detailing includes simple Greek or Roman-style columns or pediments and square chimney stacks. Due to their steeply raked roofs, the front elevation of these homes conceals the sides of the building. American Colonial homes are usually rectangular in shape, but homeowners often add extensions to the side or rear elevations. One home style that’s flourished on the architectural evolutionary tree is the Craftsman bungalow, as identifiably Southern California as the Hollywood sign.

They often lash out at each other, or the adults, especially the boys—one cuts his arm and uses a marker to deface the facility. And Wilmont opens the door to how much situations like this trickle down across generations. "She copies what she saw in her childhood," says a social worker who speaks of seeing mothers who were children at Lysychansk now dropping off their offspring.

The Ultimate Guide to Los Angeles Architecture

Her deadline is approaching, after which she may be sent to an orphanage, unless her estranged grandmother agrees to be her guardian — not a given in such fraught times. For the younger, cherub-faced Sasha, blood relatives are not an option, though when a lonely single woman expresses an interest in fostering her, the film is warmed by the promise of mutual healing. The Lysychansk Center for The Social and Psychological Rehabilitation of Children is designed to be temporary. Children can only stay there for nine months before they have to either find guardianship or be sent off to orphanages.

Storyline

Thanks to a small team of social workers — it’s truly hard to tell if there are two or three or more — the center isn’t a depressing place, though its Eastern European-standard external architecture might lead you to expect that. The kids celebrate holidays and even get the occasional visitor in a unicorn or Elsa costume. Last month, one of the most surprising Oscar nominees was "A House Made of Splinters," a film that edged out some strong contenders in the Best Documentary category and is getting a VOD and limited theatrical release today. Filmed at an orphanage in Eastern Ukraine before the war began there in February of last year, it's hard to push away thoughts of how much this part of the world has been decimated over the last 12 months. Wilmont’s filmmaking approach is deeply influenced by cinema verité and draws inspiration from luminaries such as the Maysles Brothers and Frederick Wiseman. He skillfully wields the camera as an instrument to establish genuine connections and foster trust with his protagonists.

What are those ugly diamonds bolted onto the side of old buildings?

Named after the coastal Massachusetts region, where this architecture is ubiquitous, it is actually based on a British Georgian style from the 18th century. Transposed to the American colonies, the style has been simplified and rendered practical for local materials and climates. The suburbanization of Los Angeles characterizes the postwar period's prosperity (from 1945 to the recession of 1973). These styles were relatively inexpensive to construct, and their simplicity and utility met the needs of the burgeoning middle class. The styles of homes in Los Angeles are closely tied to the city's history and evolution. At the time of its founding in 1850, Los Angeles was scarcely more than a semi-lawless pioneer outpost with encampments near the Los Angeles River.

The Traditional style is typified by simple, unadorned facades and low or intermediate pitched roofs, usually with at least one front-facing gable or hip and a large chimney. Normandy's provincial homes featured narrow-eave, steep-hipped roofs, with side-facing gables and sometimes an L-shaped plan placing the front door at the junction of the two wings. Dormer windows often project through the eaves, and these rustic-styled homes are finished in stucco, stone, or brick. Stonework window surrounds, louvered shutters, and delicate wrought iron touches are other signatures of this style.

It’s sturdy enough to have withstood both a blackmailer’s dynamite attack and the depredations of frat boys, who were given the boot and eventually replaced by an order of Catholic nuns. If you can afford it (and many can’t, a topic not being dealt with here), the impulse that brought millions to live in Southern California also bequeathed us a landscape ornamented with marvelous houses. Houses as delightfully kooky as a neighborhood designed by Tim Burton by way of Gaudí.

These homes can be quite tall with steeply sloped roofs and multiple floors. They are often half-timbered, with wood paneling on the upper levels and stone or brickwork below. Hybrid cottage styles might include small porches and gabled dormers in attic stories. Balconies and bay windows are other possible modifications features in more extensive examples of this style. A standard detail is the decorative knee braces holding the extended eaves, from which hanging flower baskets are often hung. Windows on bungalows tend to be double-hung with single panes and simple wooden casements.

Peaking in the 1920s and 1930s but still popular today, Mediterranean Revival style draws from an eclectic blend of Spanish Renaissance and Spanish Colonial, Italian Renaissance, Andalusian and Beaux-Arts influences. Commonly found in Florida and Southern California, these homes offer comfort and often integrate interior courtyards and landscaped gardens. Popular in America between 1915 and 1945, French-inspired styles were popularized by soldiers returning home from the World Wars.

The kids who leave with a relative or a foster parent or even an actual parent promising newfound sobriety often return months later. In some cases, they return years later to visit their own children, confiscated by the State. It’s the last time that “the frontline,” which has Ukraine back in headlines again this week, is mentioned in the documentary, premiering in competition at Sundance. A House Made of Splinters assumes that you have some awareness of the years of unrest in Ukraine — some sense of the source of the movie’s bleakness. Simon Lereng Wilmont's documentary focuses on a shelter for children impacted by unrest in Ukraine, specifically the experiences of a trio of sad-eyed subjects.

Look below the glassy skyscrapers and you'll find Art Deco high-rises in Downtown Los Angeles, craftsman bungalows in Pasadena and envious estates along the hills and beaches. We think Los Angeles architecture is worth celebrating, so we've put together this guide to some of the city's most remarkable buildings and styles. French eclectic might blend aspects of Craftsman, Cottage, or other styles to create a hybrid form while still retaining some of the rustic elements of French provincial homes, such as steeply raked grey-tiled roofs and brick chimneys. Chateauesque, as its name suggests, is a grander and more formal look, borrowing from French medieval castle design. Large homes in this style often have round towers or square turrets surmounted with conical or pyramidal roofs.

These homes' interiors are often open-plan with built-in cabinetry incorporated into large fireplaces, such as benches on either side. This was also the era of planned subdivisions like Hollywoodland (in upper Beachwood Canyon), Whitley Heights, and Outpost Estates. The construction boom ran out of steam when the U.S. stock market crashed in 1929. In variants from tiny two-bedrooms to airy mansions, the style lives on in pre-war homes that adorn hillsides from Silver Lake to the sea, like the late actress Dolores del Rio’s 1926 Hollywood home of tile and wrought iron and chalk-white stucco.

Comfortable open-plan interiors were softened with designer furnishings, and these homes were often intended to be admired as works of art and showcases for design collections. Decorative arches and shady terraces are common features, as are projecting porches over heavy wooden front doors. Windows often are tall with shutters on either side, and where roofs are sloped, the angle tends to be shallow. Overlapping terracotta pantiles co-ordinate with pale yellow or ochre exteriors. Modern versions of this style usually keep the low-angled, projecting eaves and large porches, whilst substituting more modern materials, exteriors with light colors, and additional upper floor space. Natural materials such as stone and wood are preferred, with a focus on a high degree of craftsmanship and easy integration into natural surroundings.

Cottage homes in a traditional English style are highly sought-after. Cottage styles often incorporate idiosyncratic layouts, cozier rooms, and curving roof eaves sometimes finished with brickwork or mock-thatch. That’s not to say that “A House Made of Splinters” — the title seemingly alluding to the broken-off lives contained within — is entirely a downbeat exercise. Rather, it’s an affecting diary of life continuing in the worst of circumstances, disrupted equally by sorrow and fleeting joy. Take the opening sequence, following a social worker as she perkily breezes through the dorms with a morning wake-up call, jostling bleary-eyed kids into a vigorous musical aerobics routine. “Every tenth door here hides a broken family,” the voiceover continues, describing the shattered region that the shelter serves; here, staff forge a sense of family from the fragments.

A surprise Academy Award® nominee for Best Documentary Feature this year, A House Made of Splinters is the latest work from internationally lauded director and cinematographer, Simon Lereng Wilmont. Born in Copenhagen, Denmark, Wilmont graduated as a Documentary Film Director from The National Film School of Denmark in 2009. His first feature documentary, The Distant Barking of Dogs (2017), premiered at IDFA and received critical acclaim, winning the Best First Appearance award and a Peabody Award in 2020.

What's more, the creation of the VA Loan program lowered the barriers to entry for home ownership. Minimal Traditional homes were perfect for fulfilling the demand for scalable, affordable homes. In fact, it was the predominant residential architectural style in America until it was superseded by Ranch-style homes in the 1950s.
